PROGRAM GOAL
The Native Family Courtwork Program was established to ensure Native
people in conflict with the law or involved in the Child Welfare System
receive equitable treatment. Native Family Courtworkers assist those
people involved in the judicial process as well as provide for
preventative community legal education.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
To ensure access to all native people in Ontario, regardless of their
status receive the best available legal and justice related services
prior to, during and following a court appearance and to maintain the
effectiveness of those services.
To reduce the sense of alienation experienced by Native persons who
are in conflict with the law and to bridge the cultural and linguistic
gap between Native people and the justice system.
