MISSION STATEMENT
The Ontario Federation of Indian Friendship Centres is mandated to
assist the area Friendship Centre in meeting their goals and objectives
and to deliver culturally appropriate alcohol and drug information.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Objective for the Aboriginal Alcohol and Drug Program To promote
alcohol/drug free lifestyles within the urban Aboriginal community. To
promote healthy alternative to alcohol/drug and solvent abuse. To
promote a culturally appropriate system of addictions treatment services
and programs for urban Aboriginal people with alcohol, drug and solvent
abuse problems. Also promote existing Ministry of Health sponsored
treatment services models within the urban Aboriginal community. To
increase the sensitivity and awareness of non-Aboriginal services
providers in the addictions field and the more generic health, social
and correctional services to Aboriginal culture and issues. Increase the
emphasis on cost effective treatment services development and delivery
for alcohol/drug and solvent abuse programs within the existing services
structure of the Friendship Centre.
Wholistic Approach:
Mind - Body - Spirit
Activities to increase participation in helping to make our community
alcohol/drug and solvent free. Honouring our families in our community
for the hard work individuals who make the change in their own
lifestyle. Community appreciation week for all those that participated
or inter-acted with our community. Set-up community functions such as
pot-luck and socials (drumming and dancing) awareness and educating the
community on addictions, traditional teaching circles, men/women
circles. Life skills workshops, and to decrease incidences of relapse.
Goals
The Aboriginal alcohol and drug program has been in the North Bay Indian
Friendship Centre since 1983. This program is funded through the
Ministry of Health and under the supervision of the Ontario Federation
of Indian Friendship Centre which is located in Toronto, Ontario. The
Aboriginal alcohol and drug program goals are to meet community needs
and to assist people in addressing alcohol/drug issues. Preventing and
minimizing the negative affects of addictive substances in the
Aboriginal individuals (family & community). The Aboriginal alcohol and
drug program will set up appropriate referrals to Native or non-native
treatment centres for the individuals. The Aboriginal Alcohol and Drug
office is set up for those who wish to sign out resource material. For
