Cultural Diversity and Awareness Worker

 

Supervisory Relationship

 

Employed by the North Bay Indian Friendship Centre, responsible to the policies and directions by the NBIFC Board of Directors and under the direct supervision of the Executive Director or designate. 

Roles

  1. Provides the direction and leadership for the development an Friendship Centre awareness program and components; that includes staff involvement, promotion, education, language and culture and development support

  2. provides assistance in the direction, development and leadership for Cultural awareness and event planning program, administration, event planning manual development, reporting, work plan, program goals and objectives, and evaluation mechanism

  3. Assist NBIFC Board of Directors and under the direct supervision of the Executive Director compile, maintain and process information relating to awareness, marketing, volunteer recruitment and training.

  4. Plan, organize and co-ordinate conferences, meetings, seminars, exhibitions, trade shows, festivals and other events.

  5. This unit will also function as the public relations and communications department who will develop and implement communication and promotion strategies and information programs, publicize activities and events, and manage media relations on behalf of  NBIFC Board of Directors and under the direct supervision of the Executive Director, and performers, athletes, writers and other talented individuals.

Main duties
Perform some or all of the following duties:
 

  1. Meet with trade and professional associations and other groups to promote and discuss awareness events, and programs that increases awareness of the North bay Indian friendship Centre, it’s programs and services.
  2. Meet with sponsors and organizing committees to plan scope and format of events, to establish and monitor budgets and to review administrative procedures and progress of events
  3. Co-ordinate services for events, such as accommodation and transportation for participants, catering, signage, displays, translation, special needs requirements, audio-visual equipment, printing and security
  4. Organize registration of participants, prepare programs and promotional material, and publicize events
  5. Plan entertainment and social gatherings for participants
  6. Train and supervise volunteer support staff required for events
  7. Ensure compliance with required by-laws
  8. Manage contract requirements for services, oversee suppliers' invoices, maintain financial records, review final billing submitted for events and prepare reports.
  9. Develop, implement and evaluate communications strategies and programs designed to inform clients, employees and the general public of the cultural awareness initiatives
  10. Gather, research and prepare communications material for internal and external audiences
  11. Conduct public opinion and attitude surveys to identify the interests and concerns of key groups served by the organization
  12. Prepare or oversee preparation of reports, briefs, speeches, presentations, Web sites and press releases
  13. Develop and organize workshops, meetings, ceremonies and other events for publicity, fund-raising and information purposes
  14. Prepare and deliver educational and publicity programs and informational materials to increase awareness of the North bay Indian friendship Centre
  15. Initiate and maintain contact with the media
  16. Arrange interviews and news conferences
  17. Co-ordinate special publicity events and promotions for internal and external audiences
  18. Assist in the preparation of brochures, reports, newsletters and other material

Qualifications 

  1. Must be  minimum 1st yr. university.
  2. Must have excellent communication skills; oral & written.
  3. Must possess strong leadership skills.
  4. Must have extensive knowledge of Aboriginal Culture and Traditions.
  5. Must have working competencies in the following computer software applications.
    1. MS Word
    2. MS Excel
    3. MS Power Point
    4. Internet Explorer
  6. Must have a valid Class “G” License.
