JOB DESCRIPTION
I. POSITION TITLE:
CARE SUPPORT WORKER ASSISTANT
II SUPERVISION:
Employed by the
North Bay Indian Friendship Centre, responsible to the policies and directions
as determined by the N.B.I.F.C. Board of Directors and under the direct
supervision of the Executive Director or designate.
III AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:
To ensure the
development and provision of culturally appropriate community support services
through a variety of program formats specific to individual Friendship Centre
communities. To ensure the development of community support services with
particular attention to the needs of Aboriginal seniors/elders, the “disabled”
and the chronically ill with special needs, and to provide for the development
of a comprehensive volunteer support circle for the program.
IV JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENTS:
- To
develop community support services based upon community identified
needs; such as, meal programs, transportation, friendly visiting,
care-giver support, adult day programs, respite care which will give
families the opportunity to provide mutual support to one another
such as in support groups, healing circles, etc., home maintenance
and repairs, security checks.

INDIVIDUALS/FAMILIES:
- To
ensure Aboriginal people have access to all long term care programs
and services they require.
- To
participate on local Long Term Care community committees and boards
to ensure Aboriginal representation and advocacy.

Ensure access to medical and Aboriginal language translation as
required.

CARE SUPPORT ACTIVITIES:
- To conduct ongoing community consultations and needs assessment
related to community based service long-term care needs.
- Establish and maintain community contacts with other voluntary
Aboriginal and non-aboriginal organizations for the purposes of
networking.

VOLUNTEER DEVELOPMENT:
- In consultation with the N.B.I.F.C. community will assist in the
developing a community mobilization plan to recruit, train and
maintain community volunteers such as the “disabled”,
seniors/elders, youth and other focus groups as identified for a
variety of community support activities; i.e., drivers, friendly
visiting, etc.
- Assist in the development of volunteer manual.
- To assist in the development of relevant policies and procedures
related to volunteers.
- Will provide guidance to the N.B.I.F.C. volunteers involved in
the Care Liaison Program as required.
- Will work collaboratively with existing Aboriginal volunteer
circles in Friendship Centre communities such as Youth Groups, etc.

GENERAL:
- Will work closely with other Friendship Centre staff as per
N.B.I.F.C. process.
- To provide cultural sensitivity training to Aboriginal and
non-aboriginal individuals, groups, etc., specifically related to
the providing of culturally appropriate long-term care.
- Maintaining effective communications at all times, written
and/or verbal.
- Ensuring that all confidentiality requirements are met as per
N.B.I.F.C. policy and the law.
- Other related duties as may be assigned from time to time, by
the immediate supervisor.
V. RESPONSIBILITY:
Shall mean doing or causing to be done, the functions and
related tasks specified.
VI. QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge and experience in native
community development.
- 1st college and/or
university level accreditation or equivalent work.
- Knowledge of Aboriginal language
and culture(s) an asset.
- Good oral and written communication
skills.
- Group facilitation skills.
- Knowledge and experience in the
area of long term care and Aboriginal peoples.
- Ability to work as a member of a
team.
- Good management, planning skills
and the ability to successfully facilitate multiple interest situations.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
