On July 22, 2002, the Weegwahs Weegwahm (Birch Bark Home) held its Grand Opening. The home will strive to provide a lasting solution to homelessness and welfare dependence for men, woman and children by finding individual solutions to poverty.

Recently, Pam Stevens, from Nipissing Reserve was hired by the North Bay Indian Friendship Centre as a Shelter Counsellor. Her job is to fulfill the goals and organize the home.

The house will also tailor it’s programs to address the cause of each person’s homelessness, offering a full continuum of services from the home to permanent housing. The goal is to provide a realistic and lasting solution to the cycle of poverty based homelessness.
